Week One Assignment
There is no one set theory or theoretical background supporting clinical based decision making. As (Muir, 2004) “said there are various amounts of theories that support clinical based decision making and these theories have various amounts of backgrounds.”  There are many theories that support clinical based decision making. Doctors and healthcare practitioners can only make decisions based on the theory that they learned or the theory that they feel is the right one. The theories that doctors are most likely to use when making clinical decisions are as (Spring, 2008) “stated the transtheoretical model, fuzzy-trace theory, behavioral science theory and theory of reason action.” There are many more theories that Spring does not talk about that doctors can use when making decisions.
All these theories have a different background and different ways that doctor can use them to make a decision. Take, for example, a doctor that uses the theory of reason action to make a clinical decision would look to the patients actions and attitudes to make a decision on what treatment would be the best but a doctor that uses the transtheoretical model would look at how ready the patients is for a change and use that to make a decision on what treatment would be best. Does this mean this two doctor that used two different theories to make their choices are wrong? No, it says that there needs to be one set theory that all doctors used to make their decision.
I think patient-centered care can’t work without a universal theory that can support clinical decision making by doctors. Not having one set theory when it comes to clinical based decision making has caused problems within the health care system for both doctors and patients. These theories had all been used at different times and in different ways, by not having one set theory that all doctors can use to make decisions has made it harder for doctors to make decisions for themselves or from their patients.
Evidence-based decision making has not been taught to the health care practitioners or doctors of today. When society does not have doctors and health care practitioners trained in evidence-based decision making, you can have a lot of patients that could be harmed. A doctor could prescribe a treatment that was shown to be harmful. If we train doctors and health care practitioner in evidence-based practices and evidence-based decision making, then we can start to implement more integrative health practice within the mainstream.
(Jamileh Farokhzadian ; Poorchangizi, 2017) “stated that evidence-based decision making can be delivered in many training programs and can also be implemented within many college programs.” If we have doctors and health care practitioner trained in evidence-based decision making, then they would be up to date on research and they would be more likely to make a better decision on what treatments are right for patients. I would want my doctor to make a decision based on evidence than the other way around.I would want to know where he or she is getting their information from, so I can research the treatment that they would like to use so that I could make an informed decision on my health.
The solution to the problem of not having healthcare practitioner trained in evidence-based decision making is to start offering a program that can teach health care works that are already in the field. We can do this by providing a workshop on the weekend to health care works.
For future health care worker, we can start to make evidence-based practice and decision forming part of the course curriculum within health care program within universities and colleges. As (Srinivasan M, 2002)”stated at the Indiana University School of Medicine this school has started an evidence-based practice class that teaches students evidence-based decision making.”
There are only a few universities and colleges that have a program within the health care system that teaches evidence-based practice and evidence-based decision making. We need more universities and colleges to offender this to students so that when they go into the healthcare field, they can make the best decision that is based in evidence and that evidence is up to date and current.
There are many benefits to clinical case reporting within integrative medicine. As (Wardle ; Roseen, 2014 )” stated the benefits of case reporting is that it can provide important insight that one can use to learn about treatments that can be offered.”We would not be where we are today in integrative medicine without case reports. Patients can look up case reports about drugs and treatment to make an informed decision on what therapies or medicines are right for them. Patients could not do this if there were no case reports published.
Case reporting can also help when large groups of researchers what to start a study. Researchers can use the information that the case report has in it to formulate a hypothesis, or research question, as well as researchers, can use the case report to gain insight into the research that has already be done on that subject. The case report can be used as a guide for researchers in all step of the scientific process. As (Jackson, Cleary, ; Hickman, 2014) “stated that case reporting could be used in classrooms to help future health care works in learning how to make a clinical and evidence-based decision.”
Case reporting can be helpful will future health care worker because within a classroom setting they can read the case reports and then the students could answers questions about how they would use the information prospered within the case report. Students could use case reports to learn about treatments or therapies that they are interested in, and then the students could apply what they learned to write up a research paper about this treatments and therapies.
