Tom Robinson is portrayed as a stereotypical horrid black man by the white community around him. However, Tom is not the bad guy that everyone makes him out to be. He is a very polite and hardworking man, who is only trying to earn a living for him and his family. He kindly helps out 19 year old Mayella Ewell with cutting an old piece of furniture, just as a good deed. Tom says in his court trial that he did not accept any change, that Mayella “offered him a nickel the first time. That he was glad to do it, Mr. Ewell didn’t seem to help her none, and neither did the chillun, and he knew she didn’t have no nickels to spare” (Lee 218). This quote proves that Tom does not fit the typical black man stereotype that all white people of this time assume. Even though he could want the extra change, Tom did not accept it since his intention was purely just to assist Mayella. He actually feels sorry for her, and he would not even think to lay a hand on her. As the trial progresses, Atticus Finch tries to show everyone how unfair the the court system is. He says to the jury,” ‘…you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption- the evil assumption- that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber’ ” (Lee 232). This quote shows how prejudice the people of this community are. The court believes that Tom is not innocent just because he is a black man, and the woman accusing him is white. All of the racial judgements on Tom cost him his freedom.
