Chronic Illnesses
Some of the major causes of disease and death in the 21st century include chronic illnesses despite the many strategies in the public health to address the issue (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Some of the chronic illnesses include heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, and other respiratory diseases (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Although the government and healthcare organizations have implemented strategies to address these illnesses and to increase the quality of life for individuals suffering from these diseases, the death rate has decreased. However, they continue to affect the American citizens negatively (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Most chronic illnesses are because of poor lifestyle choices where the state and local governments have implemented educational strategies to educate the public on healthy life style choices, which will positively impact their overall health status (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Poor life style choices also include tobacco use, lack of physical activities, which can lead to obesity, and excessive indulgence in alcohol (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).
The health status of a nation is based on factors, which include the birth rate, life expectancy, and death rate (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Chronic illnesses directly influence the life expectancy of individuals as well as the death rate (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). The government has implemented strategies to improve socioeconomic conditions both at the state and at local levels, which have resulted to a decrease in the mortality rate, which is a major achievement in the public health (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). These strategies have also led to the increase of life expectancy for individuals suffering from chronic illnesses. Other public health measures aimed at improving the health status of the American citizens include sanitization measures and immunizations aimed at preventing the infection rate from increasing (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).
The longevity of life is also associated with these chronic illnesses as the older population is highly affected by chronic illnesses and end of life care has been implemented to ensure that the older populations are not at a high risk of developing these illnesses (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Public health efforts aimed at decreasing the development of chronic illnesses and the negative effects associated with them have had a positive impact as chronic illnesses like diabetes, and heart related illnesses have decreased (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Public health efforts that include training and strategies aimed to influence individual behaviors, which have a direct relation to the chronic illnesses, have improved the medical care in healthcare organizations and the overall health of most American citizens (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).
