Imperialism once troubled America and is still the case with many regions around the world. Efforts to secede from one’s country have been accomplished many times throughout humanities history yet the same efforts in other regions often developed to nothing but further friction and division. Groups of people deserve to decide whether they choose to remain a part of a country or be self-determined. Instead of being tormented by the possible social, economic, political, aggression, and cultural issues that could potentially come from imperialism.
To begin with, an example of an economic burden lies in Catalonia. The Catalans are forced to distribute their wealth to other poorer regions of the European country Spain. Economically advantaged regions like Catalonia agitate for secession in order to end subsidizing disadvantaged regions in the state. This is one of the reasons why Catalonia wants to gain their independence from Spain. Rather than having to share their wealth with others, the Catalans prefer to secede from the country. But a huge issue on why Spain refuses to let go of Catalonia is because it because it is one of the most prosperous regions in Spain. McRae, Hamish. “Separatists have noted that though Catalonia has about 18 percent of Spain’s population, it generates more than 20 percent of its GDP.” Independent, The/The Independent on Sunday (2017): 23. News bank. Web. 6 May 2018. With this being stated Catalonia makes a significant contribution to the overall Spanish economy, making 223.6 billion Euros which in American currency is $262.96 billion a year. As time passes the Catalans are growing weary and are taking further steps to accomplish their goal but Spain counters each of the attempts with diplomatic and military force (Imperialism) to avoid falling deeper into an economic depression. Thus causing further tensions between both the Spanish and the Catalans and these relations will only grow to worsen unless separation is acquired or just fully given to Catalonia by the Spanish with no further aggression.
In like terms, America has also been faced with social issues when King George’s rule was tyrannical and infringing the colonists’ rights as Englishmen. Treating the colonial inhabitants as second-class citizens because the king created unreasonable taxes, those taxes were created because Britain just fought the French and Indians. England decided that since they fought on American soil, then it was only fair to make Colonists pay for it. This ultimately caused the colonial men rebel against the king and eventually, they declared the 13 colonies free and independent states on July 2, 1776. Signing the Declaration of Independence was seen as an act of courage because the British viewed the Declaration as an act of treason, punishable by hanging. But this rebellion towards the British crown came with a terrible price; as most people know the king was not pleased with the news and decided to initiate a war between the United States of America and Great Britain. As time progresses newer generations in the states did not feel English and felt American which further sparked the desire for independence. As it states in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…” This shows how the readers how imperialism can bring social imbalance between people and cause people to use war tactics to break free from the disrepute that the colonial inhabitants were being forced to cope with and with complete courage they were able to defeat the British.
In like terms, another issue that can come from imperialism is the potential break out of a war between the imperial nation and a colony that has to cope with the policies. This could potentially mean that innocent humans could be at risk due to rising tensions between one another. Cole, Jones T. “Both raids were conducted by regular American forces, not bandits, vigilantes, or unruly militiamen, and both enjoyed the sanction…the results of the 1777 attack on General De Lancey’s home—private property in flames; unarmed women and children beaten, left homeless, and insulted; and servants murdered—would have been unthinkable in the spring of 1776 to those very types of men who were now so pleased.” “The rage of Tory-hunting”: Loyalist Prisoners, Civil War, and the Violence of American Independence 81:3 (2017): 719-746 vol. America: History and life with full text. Web. 6 May 2018. This helps one portray an image on what types of inhumane actions were conducted during those times. As mentioned in the source we can read first hand on how normal and neutral humans who had no intention of hurting anyone else had to, unfortunately, pay the price with their own lives due to the fact that the United States of America departed from Great Britain.
Furthermore, imperialism can also cause cultural issues between the people of a colony. In the Northern tip of Africa, the country of Morocco clashed it out with a European country. After the 100 years war, France turned the attention towards Morocco. An issue with both of the countries initiated the Franco-Moroccan war; declared in1844. France ultimately won the war and the treaty of Tangers was signed. After the war was over France continued to find opportunities to annex Morocco as when of their own. Eventually many of France had already occupied northern Morocco and was put under the protection under French rule in 1912 through the treaty of Fez the French laid a protector over Morocco this treaty ended Morocco’s reality as a completely independent country and gave France all control over Moroccan affairs; ultimately this lead to French culture assimilating in Morocco. Today in the country there are several of the countries inhabitants who speak Spanish, French, and Arabic due to imperialism. Flores, Micheal. Morocco and Imperialism.” https://prezi.com/o8yg03_jtgio/morocco-and-imperialism/. Accessed 7 May 2018. Through this one can see how the Moroccan society was changed because of the European influences upon them. This can ultimately cause cultural issues because young children can absorb a good amount of European culture while their parents still follow their own way of lives and can cause the newer generations and older generations to disagree with ways both of these generations approach day to day challenges.
In like terms, even though some people might think imperialism is a good thing because it allowed countries to spread the good parts of their country to their colonies but for the most part, they are completely unaware that being an imperial nation requires a lot of work. Bodie, Julius. “Modern Imperialism in Crimea and the Donbas.” Loyola of Los Angeles International & Comparative Law Review, vol. 40, no. 2, 05 Oct. 2017, pp. 267-306. EBSCOhost, ezproxy.southtexascollege.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lgh&AN=125827625&site=eds-live&scope=site. This source gives the reader an idea of how many possible things can come from owning and a colony. Another possibly outcome of owning a colony is running the constant chance of it rebelling. This has been seen put into action throughout history with the Americans towards Great Britain and Mexicans towards Spain. And this would also mean that in a scenario that a colony does seek independence then the country that controls them has to spend additional money on their military forces in order to stop the rebellion. And if no action is taken or the attempt to stop the rebellion is not enough then major profits will be lost if a country does end up losing a colony and can have devastating affects in the economy as well depending on how much that the country relied on the colony.. At some point, countries need to develop a limit on their desire to be an imperial nation and focus on bigger issues at hand which should more than likely consist of paying the nation’s debt. Through this one can be able to create an idea on how the Moroccan society was changed because of the European influences upon them. This can ultimately cause cultural issues because young children can absorb a good amount of European culture while their parents still follow their own way of lives and can cause the newer generations and older generations to disagree with ways both of these generations approach day to day challenges.
In conclusion, if people want their country, colony, or region to be self-determined rather than being forced to follow another countries policies through diplomacy or military force than they should deserve to demand their independence and if it is still refused to be given to them than the inhabitants and all people who support the cause should unite together or support the movement in other ways in order to help colonies maintain their inspiration to pursue freedom until it is given to them.
