Latanoprost and its uses
Latanoprost is a prostaglandin F2? analogue with a molecular formula of C26H40O5. It helps to increase the flow of fluid from inside of the eye into the bloodstream.
High pressure within the eyes (ocular hypertension) or eye diseases (glaucoma) can be treated with the use of Latanoprost. It can be used in patients of all ages.
Dosage
The dosage recommended is one drop in the affected eye(s) once a day in the evening. Latanoprost should not exceed more than once a day. AVOID USING IF:
If you experience allergic reaction to Latanoprost or any other ingredients used in this medicine listed in section 7.
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding
Warning and Precautions
Seek the doctor or pharmacist’s advice if the following applies to you:
If you are going to undergo or have undergone surgery to the eyes
If you have problems in the eyes such as pain, irritation, blurred vision or dry eyes
If you have severe asthma or uncontrolled asthma
If you wear contact lenses. The usage of Latanoprost may still be used but instructions in section 4 must be followed.
If you have been diagnosed or currently having viral infection of the eye caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV).
The use of Latanoprost with other medications
Latanoprost should be administered at least five minutes apart if more than one eye drops are being used. Latanoprost may interact with other medicines. You should inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medications.
Missed dose
You should move on with the usual dose taken at the usual time if one dose is missed. Avoid doubling the dose.
Overdose
Minor irritation in the eye(s), watery and redness in the eye(s) may be observed if too many drops are used. It has been shown that administration of more than one drop, once daily may decrease the effectiveness.

Methods of using Latanoprost
Contact lens users
Remove contact lens before using this medicine. It may be reinserted 15 minutes after administration of the medicine.
Instruction for use
Your hands should be washed thoroughly.
Avoid touching the eye with the tip of the bottle to avoid contamination.

Contact lenses should be removed prior to administration.
Break off the dust cover by turning it clockwise to break the seal when using the bottle for the first time.
Loosen the inner cap.

Tilt your head backwards and upwards and gently pull down the lower eyelids.

Hold the bottle above the eye and squeeze the solution gently into your eye.

Affected eye should be kept closed while pressing your fingertip against the inside corner of the closed eye and hold for one minute. This is to reduce the amount of drug that flows to the rest of the body.

The other eye is repeated if necessary.
The bottle should be recapped after use and stored properly (refer section 6).

Unwanted effects
Very common
Gradual change in eye color by increasing the brown pigment in the iris which can be permanent. It may be more observable if latanoprost is used only on one eye.
Darkening, thickening and lengthening of eyelashes and gradual changes in the fine hairs around the treated eyes.
Redness of the affected eye may occur.
Irritation on the surface of the eye (punctate keratitis), inflammation at the eyelid (blepharitis)
Headache
Blurred vision
Not common
Dizziness
Skin rash
Rare and very rare
Chest pain (angina)
Swelling of the retina (Macular oedema)
Asthma
Darkening of the skin on the eyelids
If you experience any side effects not listed above, visit your doctor or pharmacist immediately for treatment.
Storage
The medicine should be kept away from children. This medicine should not be used after the expiry date stated. The unopened bottle must be stored in a refrigerator (2°C -8°C), away from light source. It may not be stored in a refrigerator after opening but avoid areas above 25°C. The medicine should be used within 6 weeks of opening.
Contents of the pack and other information
The active substance used is latanoprost. The other ingredients include benzalkonium chloride, sodium chloride, sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate, disodium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous and water for injection. Latanoprost eye drops, solution is a clear and colorless liquid. One bottle contains 2.5ml of latanoprost eye drops. One drop contains approximately 1.5mcg of latanoprost.
